Science of Photography
 |
Photography is a combination of art and science. Application of science in the field of photography in terms of physics and chemistry refers to the science of photography. The science of photography includes camera’s physical operation, electronic internals, its lenses, film development process and printing images. At every phase of photography, a facet of science is needed to proceed to the next level. |
Producing balanced images requires a lot of practice and good understanding of the camera and its operations. A photographer needs to determine the elements of photography at every stage of shot.
Before taking a shot, photographer must analyze the subject, frame the composition and design the set-up accordingly. The science of effectuating a particular shot constitutes the lens, lightning, shutter speed, aperture, focal length and the angular position of the shot. All the mechanics need to be proportionately balanced for a good shot. In case of deficient lightning or incomplete shutter speed or skewed film speed, the resulting shot would be completely destroyed. In the science of photography, it is thus important to determine a balance between all the features of camera and its components.
After capturing the image in the camera, the next step involves the process of film development. In case of a manual camera, a photographer requires to develop the film in a darkroom whereby the film is passed through a succession of chemical baths. This involves application of chemistry in the field of photography, which is very essential to transform the negatives into the images.
The science of photography gets converted into the electronic world, In case the pictures have been taken with a digital camera. With the help of computer software’s, a photographer can make desired changes or add different effects to the digital images. Electronic technology has opened up a lot of possibilities for enhancement of a photograph. This area of science is based on the criteria of pixels and dots per inch.
Thus, the field of photography involves principles of science at every level to achieve the desired results.
