SHOWING MOVEMENT OR FREEZE ACTION

Showing Movement

While photographing subjects which are in motion, you need to decide the look of your picture before hand. If your subject is moving and you want to capture its motion, you can use a lower shutter-speed like 1/8th or 1/15th of a second. This technique can be used to capture a moving car or a fast running man. Whereas, while capturing a waterfall or a flowing river, shutter-speeds of even low values can be used like ½ second.

Freeze Action

The motion of any moving subject can be freezed by using very high shutter-speeds like 1/1000th or 1/2000th of a second. A moving car or the flowing water can be shown immovable by using this technique.

Panning can be used to freeze the moving subject while showing the still background, moving. (The process of moving tripod/hand while shooting a moving subject, in order to freeze its motion, while giving the background an in-motion look is called panning). Panning becomes easier if you are using a tripod stand. But if you are not using one, you can still try it manually.
